“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” –Rumi

A safe and regulated classroom begins with a safe and regulated nervous system. But we have to know what a safe and regulated nervous system looks and feels like. When we truly understand how and why our nervous system reacts and responds to stressors in our life, then we can prioritize strategies for staying grounded, engaged, and in control of our emotions. This self-awareness also creates a space for us to better connect and empathize with others. We can learn to recognize when our nervous system is calm and regulated and we can be accountable when it isn’t. We can be safe co-regulators and set the tone for our classrooms, our homes, and all of our interpersonal relationships.
