Admissions

St. James School was established primarily for (1) the members of St. James Episcopal Church and (2) to serve the community. St. James School reserves the right to make the final decision regarding admittance, grade placement and promotion.  Admission is considered probationary for up to six weeks in order to ensure that the school can provide an appropriate learning environment for the child.

 Age Requirements

·        A child entering the 3 year old program must be 3 by September 1.
·      A child entering the 4 year old program must by 4 by September 1.
·      A child entering kindergarten must be 5 by September 1.
·      A child entering 1st grade must by 6 by September 1.

any child otherwise qualified as to emotional, physical and mental ability.

 English Proficiency

St. James is happy to admit a limited number of non-English speakers to our pre-school and kindergarten. In grades 1-8, English proficiency is required in order that the quality of instruction is maintained. English proficiency will be determined by a reading/math test and an interview. St. James School reserves the right to make the final decision regarding admittance, grade placement and promotion.

 Entrance Testing

Student applicants in grades 1-8 will be tested in reading comprehension, mathematics and writing to ensure that they are on grade level and will have a successful experience at St. James School. Standardized test scores are acceptable and may be used in lieu of testing.

Other Requirements

Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten students may be referred for a Developmental Observation by a staff member who is trained by the Gesell Institute of Human Development. This is an additional tool  that may be used to help determine a child’s developmental progress and readiness to proceed to a different level.
