Third Annual SAES Episcopal Schools Governance Forum

Leadership responsibility in an Episcopal school can be both gratifying and challenging. In an effort to assist you with this critically important task, SAES is provide an important opportunity for you to:

  • Learn about the principles of effective Episcopal school governance from three outstanding speakers.

  • Network with board members, administrators and parish leaders representing Episcopal school throughout a six-state region.

Workshop Topics:

"Can a School Be Episcopal and Diverse at the Same Time?" The Rev. Dr. Dan Heischman, Executive Director of the National  Association of Episcopal Schools, will speak about the challenges that Episcopal schools face as they seek to maintain a Christian core while intentionally welcoming families and faculty/staff members of all faiths or of no particular faith preference.

"Effective Head of School and Board Evaluations"
Jonathan Schick, Executive Director of The Goal Consulting, will present a workshop based upon a process he has developed that links effective and systematic evaluations of the Head of School and the Board of  Trustees to a school’s goal setting and planning processes. The Head of an SAES school that has been using Mr. Schick’s system during the current school year will be available to talk about how the process is working at her school, and to help answer questions participants might have about it.

"What Do Accreditors Look For Regarding Your School's Operations and Finances?" Rick Kellogg, treasurer of the SAES Board and SAES accrediting team member, will address the fact that most Episcopal school board  members and administrators have had little or no professional training in accounting or finance. Nonetheless, they not only are expected to base critically important budgetary decisions on limited understanding, but also are held accountable for the financial health of the institution by accrediting agencies and other stakeholders. This workshop presupposes no accounting or financial background and is intended for Episcopal school leaders who would appreciate a primer on how to more effectively deal with the financial aspect of their fiduciary  responsibilities
